Beautiful building. But it has long been in need of restoration. In a very neglected condition.

A very beautiful bell tower, I remember it when my parents and I came to Pereyaslav as a child. It is a pity that they do not reconstruct.

The initiator of the construction of the Ascension Cathedral of the monastery is the Hetman of Ukraine Ivan Mazepa. In 1698 he appealed to Peter the Great to restore the ancient Pereyaslav department. In 1700 the Ascension Cathedral was already built. Until 1713, the area around the cathedral was built up with cells, cooks, houses for visitors. By this time, the residence of the Bishop of Pereyaslav had also moved to the Ascension Monastery. Since then, the cathedral has received the status of the cathedral of the Pereyaslav diocese. The Ascension Cathedral had three thrones: the central - in honor of the Ascension of the Lord, the right - the Nativity of the Virgin, and the left - in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist. In 1851 the third throne was rededicated in honor of the Venerable Martyr Macarius, Archimandrite of Ovruch, Pereyaslav Miracle Worker. Rak with his holy relics was transferred to the church on August 4, 1786 from St. Michael's Monastery. In 1816 the monastery was transferred to the category of freelance and most of the monks were enrolled in the Saratov monastery in Russia. But the cathedral still remains the cathedral of Pereyaslav bishops. In 1847 the bishop's chair moved to Poltava. The Ascension Monastery was transferred to the third category, and it became the property of the Poltava Bishop's House. The cathedral came under the direct authority of the bishop of the Poltava-Pereyaslav diocese. The Ascension Cathedral remained the main monastery church. Despite the fact that the bishop's chair was moved, the cathedral continued to be the object of pilgrimage not only for the Orthodox of the Poltava-Pereyaslav diocese, but also for the whole state. After all, the relics of St. Macarius, the head of the great martyr Daniel (Kushnir) Mliivsky, rested in the church. Bishops Nikodim Srebnytsky (1751), Ioann Kozlovych (1757), Gervasiy Lyntsevsky (1769), and Iov Bazylevych (1786) were buried in the cathedral. The Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God "Pereyaslavskaya" was located in the Ascension Cathedral. The revolutionary events that shook the country in 1917-1922 brought significant changes in the life of the Orthodox Church. In the early 30's of XX century. the church is under great oppression. The cathedral is closed and turned into a granary. During World War II, the temple was badly damaged. For a long time it stood empty. In 1953-55 the first major restoration of the cathedral took place. At the same time, the building was declared an architectural monument of national importance. After restoration until 1974, the cathedral was closed and used as a warehouse. In 1975, a museum exposition "Battle for the Dnieper near the Bukrin bridgehead" was opened in the cathedral, and a memorial "eternal fire" in memory of the fallen soldiers and Pereyaslav residents was opened in the underground arch. The bell tower of the Ascension Cathedral was built in 1770-1776 at the expense of Bishop Iov Bazylevych of Pereyaslav. It is located next to the southern facade of the temple. The belfry is three-tiered, its height is 48.3 m. On the sides of the building was joined by a stone fence from the west and a warm brick church of St. vmch. Barbarians (destroyed in 1946). The bell tower was badly damaged during World War II. In 1953, in order to preserve the monument, the bell tower was converted into a water tower and so it was used until 1986. In 1960, the first major restoration was carried out. Temporarily belongs to the commercial-terrorist sect MP-FSB.
