Illinsʹka Tserkva

The oldest building in Novomyrhorod is the Church of St. Elijah. It is an architectural monument of national importance. The church has a plaque indicating the year of construction 1766, but there are claims that this date is wrong, in fact, the church was built 20 years later. The Church of St. Elijah is an example of a tetraconch temple. This is a Greco-Byzantine type of cult architecture, which became widespread in Ukraine in the second half of the 18th century. Tetraconch temples were strictly centric, single-nave, with four attached exedras or apses (tetra - four). It is simpler - in plan they had the shape of an equilateral short cross. Often these were temples of a fortification nature. One of the first tetraconchs of Ukraine was built by the Greeks in Nizhyn (Church of John the Theologian, 1752). A total of 22 tetraconch temples are known, of which 16 have survived. On the Right Bank, I know only one - in Novomyrhorod.
