Café Castro

The food here is not really New Mexican food, but better Mexican. There IS a difference, and up until the end of the meal when the check came, the service was exceptional. I had initially asked if chips and salsa are included, waitress said yes, so when it was on the check, I asked the other Waiter about it. He assured me it would be taken care. Waitress comes over to ask about it, and I told her there was a misunderstanding, and she was fine. Owner comes up and says that though she will bag them for me, I need to be charged because I never asked the waitress about them. When I informed her that I HAD, she then said the waitress must be lying and she will deduct it from her paycheck. While I waited for the chips to be taken off, the waitress came up to me and asked if everything was okay. I apologized to her for the trouble the owner was making over $3 chips and that I would go get cash for her tip. The owner proceeded to raise her voice at me for harassing her employee, even though I had just apologized to her... what proprietor treats customers like that?! The owner had flustered and surprised me so much that I informed her that I would be back to sign the slip. I needed to go to the car and collect myself. She then followed me out to the car, threatening to call the police because I wouldn't sign the receipt, even though I explained numerous times that I needed her to leave me alone so I can cool down and bring the signed receipt back. When I went back in, a waiter was already near the door and I asked him to give my cash tip to the waitress and the receipt to the owner who was, thankfully, far from sight. The food was okay, the wait staff are great, but 1 star for an obviously over-stressed and belligerent owner. ×

While on vacation, I stopped by for an early dinner with my husband and our two sons. Delicious food. Big portions. Prices are reasonable. Excellent & friendly service from all of the staff.

Delicious food with great service. I felt like a team of servers were taking care of us. So, after a delicious dinner, my friend and I were discussing how it would be cool if they would put ice cream in the sopapilla. They must have overheard us, and they brought us one. With honey and strawberries. Are you kidding me??? Yummmmm! No diet for me!! Go in and eat!

Love this place! Delicious food and super friendly staff! They even let us hang out until the rain stopped so we could leave dry on our loaded down motorcycles! Thank you!!
