Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge

Rural wetland. Saw ducks. Deer tracks, no deer. A fish jumped in nearby river, but missed seeing it. Lots of hawks seen on trip down there and while exploring surrounding countryside.nnWas March but still winter for most part while there. So not a lot of green to fields or trees. Not some scenic mountains just Kansas countryside, low hills. More to southwest hilly but not by much. Still I went for quiet of country and was worth my time.

Magical. My husband, who is from Kansas, and I have driven past this dozens, if not hundreds, of times over the years without knowing it was there. 12 miles off the interstate, and you are in another world. Fields, rivers, wildflower meadows. This is an underrated gem.

No formal visitor center. A few signs and a couple of trail heads visible from the road...didn't have time to explore them.

Wish the paths were a little better maintenence but it is beautiful.

Falling apart. Nothing is being maintained like it use to be. River access is minimal. Not a fun place like it once was.
