Totalling almost 7,000 acres, the Shenipsit State Forest is dispersed across 11 different tracts, around Somers but also neighboring Ellington and Stafford.nnIt all began right here in Somers in 1927, with the construction of a watchtower atop the 328-meter Soapstone Mountain to keep an eye on the surrounding wooded landscape in case of fire.nnAlthough it’s not strictly part of the forest, the town of Somers maintains public land that encompasses another peak, Bald Mountain.nnBoth peaks are on the course of the epic Shenipsit Trail, which we’ll talk about below.nnAfter many decades of clear-cutting and occasional fires, the forest is mostly oak, which of course produces valuable timber, while its acorns are a vital food source for deer, squirrels and turkeys.

Good area to hike with a great view from the fire tower, but they really need to put better signs up. The directions from google got me lost, driving on a long rocky road to end up at the real entrance, which I had no idea you could drive up instead of hiking the strenuous trail. Search for “Somers Fire tower” instead so you don’t get lost. I suggest driving instead of hiking when you can.

The fire tower has been completely redone and its absolutely awesome. Scenery from the tower is breathtaking and I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a simple adventure that is easily accessible to anyone of any age.

Beautiful piece of public property with lots of old growth trees, bike paths and access to water

Fun place for trail running, biking, and hiking. Unfortunately, some visitors cruise Soapstone Mtn drive in excessively loud vehicles. Not always the best for forest solitude.
