Hard to fine a more emblematic, beautiful Catholic church in New Haven. This is the oldest church recently renovated to its amazing original splendor and where the tomb of Blessed Michael McGivney (at the left side just upon entering the Church. The combination of old carved wood and bright large stain glasses makes for an incredibly mystical experience. This is a place no visitor should ever miss
A beautiful Catholic Church with a fantastic history. It has just been completely renovated. In 1882, Father Michael McGivney, the Pastor of St Mary's founded the Knights of Columbus in the basement of the Church, along with a small group of parishioners. Father McGivney founded the KofC to protect the widows and orphans of the Parish. The KofC was founded on the 3 principles of Charity, Fraternity & Unity. The Knights of Columbus has grown since then to over 2 million members world-wide. Father McGivney was just Beatified and his Mass of Thanksgiving was held at the Church on 10/31/2020. Beatification is the last step in the process of being Canonized as a Saint of the Catholic Church.
One of the very finest Churches in area. Beautiful architecture in center of New Haven and Yale community.
I don’t attend church here but went to look inside while roaming the Yale campus. It’s quite pretty here. When I visited there wasn’t anything in session so it was nice and quiet. Seems like a peaceful place to worship. There are yellow, blue, and green colors which I have rarely seen so vividly together so that was cool.
In 1882 Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, the largest Catholic fraternal service organization in the world, at this magnificently beautiful gothic style church. Located near the grounds of Yale University, this church has a rich history, and even contains the crypt of and monument to Father McGivney. We ran a Knights if Columbus bus trip, from the Philadelphia and Bucks County Pennsylvania area to walk in the footsteps of our founders here. The trip was well attended including many knights and there wives, Legacy of Life volunteers, and members of the clergy. We were even blessed to have Bishop Michael J Fitzgerald, who is the Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia join us, who was invited by the pastor to perform the Mass that day. It was an amazing experience.
