Perfect way to spend the afternoon. #lovemygarnets
It can take awhile to figure out where on the hill and how to look for them, so be patient and persistent. We've found some more buried, but a lot were found by sifting through the surface dirt and rocks on the hillside. At first they look pretty spherical and a little darker than the pink stone. Rub away the dirt to see if it's a garnet! A spray bottle of water and cloth would be handy. They're so pretty.
Quite a long dirt road to get to the hill but once you get there, it's worth it. Amazing views of the surrounding valleys and the copper mine. You can still find garnets if you go further around the mountain which is pretty cool. You'll need at least a hammer and chisel. Also, bring water, there are restrooms at the top and a picnic area, but it gets hot walking around.
Awesome experience. Found this beauty after only a couple hours of looking... I did minimal digging and found this laying out exposed.
What an excellent place to search for garnets. We got several great specimens in just 30 minutes.
