Such a peaceful place! Nice lake and plenty of area to walk. The monument at the top of the hill is perfect for watching sunsets. One of my favorite all-time places in the area.

I wish they would have had their speakers working to tell more about the history

October 2020: the grounds are open dawn-dusk. Free admission. Plan on 1 hour. The visitor center building is only open Saturday & Sunday 10-3. There is also no fee. Looks pretty small with space exhibits. The grounds have 3 walking trails: There is a 1/4 mile level and paved loop with interpretive signs where the structures were. There are no remaining or rebuilt structures. There is a section of the original Oregon Trail you can walk (500 feet). The third trail leads UP to a pillar memorial to the Whitmans. This trail leads back down to a cemetery with no headstones of folks who died on the Oregon Trail & buried in a mass grave/ plot here and adjoining is the grave of the Whitmans & their adopted kids. Total for this loop which includes a moderate ascent is about 1/4 mile.

Thankfully this was open to visit and walk around learning from the many historical markers. There were maps available as well but the visitors center was closed. Clean bathrooms and running water fountains available.nnGreat short loops to walk outside, some shaded, some hilly.

I was a nice slice of preserved history; you can even walk a piece of the oregon trail. It was a peaceful place to have a picnic lunch and get a little walking in before heading back out on the road. The rangers are super helpful and are ready to answer any questions they can!
