Off the beaten path but an important place to observe the scene of the first day of the battle.

The extreme right flank of the Union army on July 1st. The observation tower here is worth climbing, you get a sense of what the XI Corps was up against, trying to defend against two Confederate divisions without the benefit of easily defensible terrain.

(Re-edited/updated from October 2018) Rarely visited, beautiful area, fantastic sunset. Brigadier General Francis Barlow troops delayed advancing Confederates on the first day of the battle. He was wounded and given care by Confederate General John Gordon. Recommend you to read the story of General Barlow, as it's very interesting.nTo find the 54th NY Infantry First Day Marker, follow line of sight from the cannon to the treeline. Look for the game trail. Go into the woods about 20 yards and look for a small clearing on your right (Eastward). The marker is there. Depending on the time of year, it may be slightly over grown.

Great place to visit on the battlefield

A little part of the battlefield that most don’t even know exists or visit.
