Excellent hike. First 1.3 miles switchbacks up the cliff sides to a plateau. The tread here is mostly firm clay with out slope. Just under a mile up there's a 6' rock wall to climb that has enough holds for hand and foot holds (see photo). Just below the plateau the trail has significant exposure and sections of loose dirt/rocks in the tread primarily in the tighter switchbacks. Walking poles coming down might help some here, but you'll have to stow them on the rock wall section.
At just under a mile once on the plateau you come to the petroglyph cave. The plateau section is fairly flat with occasional sandy sections as it slowly gains elevation.
The petroglyphs and clay staining of the sandstone is amazing. Views everywhere. In 50+ years of hiking this is now a favorite. @5.2 miles r/t, 650' gain.
Hot, and still goes uphill. Lots of sand at the top.
Beautiful hike starts out with a long set of switchbacks gaining altitude quick then traverses the landscape up to a rocky ledge where there are a few small petroglyphs. Great views all the way.
