This is a gem of site. 1) The battery is one of the best preserved of all the gun batteries on the mouth of the Columbia River. 2) It sits on top McKenzie Head which is significant to the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as its Clark's first viewpoint of the pacific ocean. 3) It offers a great view even today (given that, thanks to the jetty, sand accretions have moved the ocean back from the base of McKenzie Head).nnTake the time to explore. You will be reward with 270 degree views and a well preserved WWII artifact.

Worth the short steep hike for the view and a little history. The bunker is laid out like a T with 3 entrances on the main level and one up above. Another building is just downhill Good views from many angles including the top of the bunker. My 3 sons had a great time exploring the area wile Mom and Grandma took pictures. Beautiful forest too. We had a doe come up about 10 feet from us. Highlight of our trip to Long Beach.

Always a good hike up to Battery 247! Though I normally have the place to myself, it was pretty crowded

Battery 247, located at McKenzie Head, was part of the larger Fort Canby. I like this spot because few people mill around it so that you can contemplate its history undistracted. From there you can look out over Cape Disappointment just like the coast watchers did. Two large calibre coastal guns deterred enemy ships from entering the Columbia River. Only the turret bases remain. Walk into the underground bunker thru a wide hall where dark shadows keep secret the past. There are other paths that take you to smaller bunkers too.
