Rowland Lake Falls

Pretty scenery, but there is no waterfall at these “falls”

Did the Labyrinth to Coyote Wall loop hike in mid March 2019. Wildflowers were just beginning to bloom. It was an absolutely beautiful almost 8 mile hike climbing to the top of the Washington side of the Eastern Gorge where stunning views greeted my aching feet. The oak groves between dramatic columns of basalt were the welcome breaks between switchbacks climbing some 1800 feet for the first couple of hours. Sitting atop Coyote Wall looking down to where I started I felt strong and wild like the winds that visit this place.

Visited here Monday 2/17/2020. Don't follow directions from Google maps via this link, park at Coyote Wall parking area (bathrooms, no fee) or Rowland Lake, if you park here the trail will be the first on the right hand side after Rowland lake Falls (no fee, no bathrooms, small parking pull out.). The turn outs for these directions are very small on the shoulder off highway 14, I did not trust parking my car there nor did I see a trail that led to Old Highway 8 trail.nnRowland Lake falls is very beautiful this time of year. Closer to the east side of Old Highway 8 Trail 1.02 miles from Coyote Wall parking area.nnI parked at Coyote Wall parking area before sunrise, first car in the lot. Bathroom was dirty and was probably ripe in the afternoon. Parking for maybe 30 cars. I went east on Old Highway 8 trail to the second trail on the left. Lower Labyrnth trail? (Didn't have a name at the begining). Trail is single track with some rocky sections to climb over. Can be slick in spots after a rain. There is one plank to cross Labyrnth Creek (not slippery yesterday, but does have some bounce to it in the middle under pressure). Labyrnth creek feeds to Rowland falls, so there is a bunch of water in there right now, enough to get your feet wet. One other trails going west halfway up the Labyrnth trail is closed for restoration.nnBeautiful canyon I only saw one other person on this trail around 8am.nnOnce at the top (Labyrnth Creek trail = 2.56 miles one way) you have multiple options on where to go, I chose to cut across via Atwood Road (in good condition, trail can get slick after rain. Wide trail. There is a bridge across upper Labyrnth Creek.) To Old Ranch Road. Saw a trail runner and his pup 10am (in good condition with a tiny stream crossing). To Little Moab Trail (this trail goes right along the wall, there are trails that go close to the wall and some further away. It is steep and rocky. Can have high wind gusts as well.) Saw 10 people and 6 dogs. 10:30am. Loved Little Moab trail, beautiful area.nnI would not recommend these trails for young children unless under constant supervision, there are steep drop offs. Other than portions of Old Highway 8 these trails are not Handicap accessible. (There is one Handicap spot available at Coyote Wall parking area).nnGet here early on a weekend or holiday as parking fills up fast. I left here at 11am and there were only 2 spots left, also saw about 30 people from Old Highway 8 trail to my car, including bikers.nnHorses are not allowed on these trails from Oct to May I believe.nn2/17/2020 Monday, solo. Old Highway 8 to Rowland Lake Falls to Rowland Lake to Old Highway 8 to Lower Labyrnth creek to Upper Labyrnth Creek to Atwood Road to Old Ranch Road to Little Moab to Old Ranch Road to Old Highway 8 and back to Coyote Wall parking area, WA 6.77 miles with 1133ft elevation gain.

This is an incredibly fun windy trail, that meanders through stream ravines, over large rock formations and in and out of the shadows, all while giving you some of the most incredible views of the gorge.

Don't come during summer time. However, it is still beautiful view and scenery just no falls.
