I knew it could make a perfect evening break spot. An ancient flood sculpted this land, Black Oaks took root in the sand, and yet didn't grow close to one another. The canopies of most trees touch, shutting out the sun. These oaks grow closely, but only so close. Some property keeps them apart, loving space as much as bluebirds.nnThat's the definition of an Oak Savannah. Oaks that let in the sun. The sun has set, and yet I can still see the illuminated sky. I read the interpretative marker. On these sands lives a butterfly called the Frittiliary. I have to look that up, a butterfly that needs a special environment. It reminds me of the Blue Karner.nnThe ponds in back host the Ornate Box Turtle. The recent cold that arrives at night encourage them to hibernate under the waters soon. I already feel a chill. I am beginning to forget my reading of the sign. Is it the blue footed violet the conservancy protects on this preserve? I still have time to learn even after all these years.
Beautiful. Peaceful.
