This is one of the largest urban parks in America, and with a 30 minute hike up, you can get to the perfect lookout over Birmingham, being able to see the entirety of Jones Valley and beyond. There are numerous trails, a quarry, and full tree shade. There’s a small historical lodge complete with a “mini zoo,” great for children and adults as well. There is also an outdoor, roofed area complete with tables near the bathrooms for a simple picnic or other small events. The only negative, when walking the trails, you must constantly look down to see where you are stepping, there are no smooth trails, and so it makes it hard to enjoy the beautiful flora surrounding you.
This was our first trip to Ruffner Mountain and we were so happy with the preserve! The trails are well marked and well maintained. We took the Quarry Trail to the Overlook Trail. The Overlook Trail is right on the rim of the quarry and some areas are tight but it is well marked and you just need to be careful. We veered off on the Crusher Trail. These trails are just rugged enough but also not too rocky or too many roots. We loved the hike and went a little over 3 miles. We will certainly be back to take the Geology Trail and the Ridge Valley Loop.
Great walk and view! The park use fee is modest ($3) so do not be shy to deposit. The trails are in a great shape. Follow the white trail from the parking lot and then red/green trail to the quarry overlook, continue to the city overlook and there is a trail going down to the quarry. We used picnic tables next to the parking lot, these were in a good shape.
What a great place to get out of the car and explore for a bit. Trails are nice, groomed well and not super difficult, at least the quarry trail we went on. They have fun markers explaining flora around the various trails.
I love Ruffner Mountain, it is a great preserve for hiking and just being out in nature. The trails are clear and maintained and range from easy hikes to difficult hikes. There is an old iron mine there that you can see and also a rock quarry with excellent views. Definitely one of my favorite places to go to!
