I spent three months taking my son thirty miles one way to lessons every Tuesday and Thursday. When hearing that my son also took Judo, I was told that I had to tell Grandmaster Lewis. When I talked to Grandmaster Lewis, he began to tell me all about what his school has done, and he talked about himself unceasingly for about ten minutes or so. He, then, told me a couple of stories about how other disciplines will try to “come for his students” like some weird karate kid fantasy. I told him my son is a good fighter and should do both strike and grappling techniques. He, then, tried to tell me how he can’t allow my son to do both TaeKwonDo and Judo. I told him that an Army brother of mine led his Judo class and doesn’t have any issues with his students taking part in any other martial art or sport so long as it doesn’t harm the student or the school. I didn’t want to discuss my military exploits with him; feeling some kind of way, he made several military references stating that “Jessica Lynch” was saved by one of his students, and how he does charity drives for military. The latter was false as a thirteen year old student was single handedly doing the charity work, and the Jessica Lynch crack was just comical. Tired of hearing all about this dude’s pride, I tried to coax the discussion to an end. Not wanting to tell this dude how I really feel about him trying to Debo a seven year old, I said that’s unfortunate but we will continue to do Judo and pursue another form of strike martial arts. Something like “no other sports or disciplines” should be clearly stated outright before countless dollars are spent and delusional fantasies, bold face lies, and grandiose stories are told.
