Pretty little parking area, less than a mile from Rock Gap shelter to the south on AT and 3.7 miles to Winding Gap on RT 64 to the north. Easy pick up for shuttle to Franklin NC at either location. One free campsite 500ft directly in front of parking lot. I stayed in my car 2 nights.. No problems.
Great hiking, beautiful views, went from rock gap to winding staircase. About a 4 mile hike. We took two vehicles, parked one at rock gap and one at winding staircase.
Great starting point for either north or south day hike.
Excellent access to the A.T. well paved.
Nice place to hike the Appalachian Trail. For a short hike (About 2.75 Miles) you can hike to Winding Stair Gap on Route 64. Take 2 Vehicles. Leave on at Winding Stair, take the 2nd Vehicle to Rock Gap and depart from Rock Gap. Nice hike. One of easier segments of the Appalachian Trail in Western North Carolina.
