Standing Indian Campground

Well maintained campground in the mountains between Hayesville and Franklin, NC,. Gorgeous campsites and trails in the Nantahala National Forest and along several creeks and the Natahala River

Where can you go camping in the southeast in the summer and always enjoy cool temperatures? I don’t know of too many, but Standing Indian Campground in the Nantahala National Forest in western North Carolina is definitely my favorite. The restrooms and showers are well kept. Campsites are generally large and spread out so you have plenty of privacy. If you must have electricity this campground probably isn’t for you. It’s a great place to see spring wildflowers, mountain laurel, flame azalea out on hiking trails, rhododendrons in the campground from June to mid July, and of course, fall leaves after the middle of October. Be sure to take the family bicycles. Many people enjoy tubing in the Nantahala River which flows through the campground. The whole Standing Indian basin is filled with marvelous hiking trails and gorgeous views. In fact, the AT pretty well circles the area. Some of my favorites are Pickens Nose, Laurel Falls, Mooney Falls, Albert’s Mountain, and Standing Indian Mountain.

No electricity. No cell service. No wifi. Completely disconnect from the real world! We LOVE it!

The campground was closed but it was nevertheless a great place to walk around in.
