We are hiking the Appalachian Trail. We've camped in Georgia and now North Carolina using campgrounds as base camps.nThe Good: Standing Indian is close to Nantahala Outdoor Center. Fishing in the creeks around the NOC. Close to the Appalachian Trail and golf courses.nnThe Bad: Loops 1 through 4 are for campers that live the 'Going RVing' TV show. Loop 5 is best for tenting. We didn't know this. We couldn't get our camper into site 66. A camp hostess kept driving by on a golf cart but offered no help. We drove down the loop to site 83, a first come, first serve site. The camp hostess stopped as we finished setting up and said, Keep your Dog on a Leash. Uhh, yes as soon as I unpack it. Then she declared we had to pay for this site. Uhh, cancel site 66 and pay for site 83, sure. We had to exit the campground to get reception to cancel site 66. When I paid for site 83 at the Camp Store, I had a bad feeling I was just giving $160 to them not the US Forest Service. It also seemed like the hostess in the cart had told the rest of her family 'about us'.nThere was a Camp Host site at Loop 5 entrance but no sign stating on or off duty. Additionally, nobody was at the Camp Host site all week. However...nThe guy living in his van in site 84, Bart, kept watching us all the time...Very Creepy. He was NOT a Camp Host. However, when the Camp Host showed up Friday night Bart and him were by his camp fire swilling gruel. The Camp Host never spoke to us and also starred at us like Bart. Saturday, Bart walked over to our site and said, 'I've received several complaints about you running your generator. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 6 am. Then he said, I know you have it muffled. And I hope you have a heater, its going to be 50 degrees tonight. Very weird since we abided by the rules posted at the camp store.nI had a tarp over the generator due to hurricane Sally. I had done a decibel check with the generator running earlier in the week to check noise at other sites. It did not register above 32 decibels, background noise level.nSo, Bart, who was not a camp host was creeping around our site when we were not there.nWe did not see a Forest Ranger during our stay. The management of Standing Indian by this one family, Camp Store: Mother, Father, Camp Hosts: Brothers and Sisters with strangers creeping around your site is very poor management by the US Forest Service. This campground is a nepotistic nightmare. Don't ask for help or information, you are at their mercy. Nobody wore masks!!! Enjoy!!

Stopped by on a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. Was so grateful for the hospitality and wonderful people. They treated me so well, even though I didn't stay. Facilities are great. Very beautiful place and some of the nicest, most informative people. Thank you for the Check Mix! I'd visit anytime. A+~ rating in my book. You're treated like they've known you for years. Very down to Earth people and so friendly. ud83dude0a

A national park, so not as great as a State park but it was a beautiful area. Bathrooms could be improved but they did the job. Was there in October and the bathrooms were freezing cold, no where to sit your stuff, I brought my camp chair with me so I could sit down to get dressed. The showers had plenty of hot water but you had to keep pushing the knob to keep the water on.
