I would recommend getting to this trail from the Cherohala skyway turn off to Joyce Kilmer Drive. We drove in the other way on a very narrow mountain road and a semi came driving down it!nnThe trail itself was muddy and slick in places probably from recent heavy rain. I recommend using a walking stick if possible. At this time the side of the lower loop that crosses a bridge from the parking lot is closed due to the trail being damaged by the water. Instead you'll want to use the loop the climbs up and to the right from the parking lot.nnThe old growth trees were huge and amazing. We also came just as wildflowers such as trout lilies and toadstool trillium were starting to blossom. Our family enjoyed this trail and the old trees.

When you get there if you want a strenuous hike take the right path. The left path is not strenuous but is closed from November 2020 to ? Until repairs are done. Beautiful trees. Calm and nice. some in our party could not do the long strenuous hike.

Amazing trees! Nice little walk (3 miles round trip). Part of the lower loop is closed due to the trail washing away. We sure hope they can fix it soon. The remaining part of the trail is in good shape.

Beautiful and serene. There were only a few people on the trails during our visit. The old growth trees were magnificent.

For a place that is so popular and so heavily traveled, I was disappointed. Trail is VERY unkept. Most of the really big trees are on the back loop and they truly are amazing! The memorials are very interesting to read. I was expecting the trail to be somewhat nicer and better maintained. Glad I went, but for the most part, it was an unsightly trail with a lot of bad sections. But the trees are spectacular!
