Wildcat Cove is easily accessible through Pepper Park Riverside and offers myriad wildlife watching opportunities. A dike trail traverses through Mangrove swamp and hammock along the Indian River lagoon providing a nice hiking-jogging trail popular with locals. It also offers a kayak/canoe launch area and fishing access to the Indian River Lagoon. Prior to the creation of the current Fort Pierce Inlet, the natural inlet to the ocean was located nearby and had a healthy native oyster population. In 2004, Hurricanes Francis and Jean delivered considerable amounts of silt to the area further damaging the oyster reef and killing many of the oysters. As part of the restoration project, intertidal oyster reef modules were deployed on Wildcat Cove’s fossilized oyster bed and continue to be maintained, expanded, and monitored to insure water quality.
