I looked for this on AllTrails, but couldn't find it. There are, apparently, 3 trails of this trail head; I found 2. It's not well marked and there are a lot of tripping hazards. Of course, that didn't stop me from going and when I have more time, I will explore now 3.
Bit muddy but good
Trailhead indicates that there are three trails: orange, yellow and green. There are no blazes or markers for these colors. The trail is very poorly blazed. There are pink ties, but they don’t always lead to continuous trails. Quite a few just came to a dead end. Trails split off with no color/indicator. We found a couple with small blue flags. We think this is a marker to indicate future trail development. We did note some trees sprayed with red/purple paint. We saw two distance markers, but the distance did not match our gps distance. It is a very confusing trail that appears to still be in development.nnIn regards to technical level, it isn’t complex, as for the trails that we did end up hiking. As they were not blazed, we followed the beaten path or where we were able to find pink ties. The elevation does vary. I’m about 40 - 50 lbs over weight and I was able to manage the changes.nnThis trail has a lot of potential. The flora is beautiful. It also provides a bit of adventure if you are into “where do you think that trail leads?” or “do you think this is part of the trail system?”
I cant believe there arent more reviews of this trail. its pretty standard as trails go with lake Mooney and the water plant to the north and the Rappahannock to the south. I went down the main trail to where rocky pen run and the rappahannock connect and did a little exploring on the way back. As you can see from the map there are 3 turn around spots that i hiked to the south. the west was the intersection and looked like the trail continued on on the other side of rocky pen run but i wasn't going to get my feet wet on this run. The central turn around spot was a trail predominately marked by pint ties and just kinda trailed off. lastly the eastern most turn around was a real nice trail that i didn't have time to finish exploreing. there were several other trails as well that i didn't even check but all in all this place is definitely worth exploring over several trips. my whole rout for this trip was 2.25 miles and they have some mile markers out there but i only found the 0.5 and 1. total elevation change from the the trail head to the river is about 150ft and is fairly gradual.
