Great paved one mile loop through the field of black lava rock formed some 5,000 years ago. The trail is level and an easy hike, the only incline is the start/finish switchback up to the parking lot but it’s not very steep and seems to be easily accessible. There are signs and numbered placards around the entire loop describing the formation of this interesting landscape along with the plants and animals that live here. There are also plenty of opportunities and signs encouraging walking on the black lava rock.

Beautiful lava flows out here, and well-maintained paths encircling the area. There are plenty of hiking opportunities, as the flows themselves are open to hikers. If you are planning on hiking, prepare the worst, hope for the best. Basically, bring lots of water, good shoes, and maybe even a helmet for the rougher parts.

Totally handicap accessible one mile loop out and back over the lava flow. Pamphlet and marked informational sign stops along the way. Amazing site, the lushest place out here.

This place was so freaking cool!! Lava, in the middle of nowhere New Mexico! And learning about where it came from and how it formed was phenomenal. For sure get a brochure in the gift shop and do the self guided tour! There’s places along the trail where you’re allowed to step off and walk on the lava, which is so cool. Zero shade though, so I recommend going in the winter like we did or bringing water and sunscreen. You can also camp here, but we just did the nature trail. Definitely a must see for the New Mexico loving person ud83dudda4
