Croydon Creek Nature Center is a small nature center in Rockville on the same property as a historic mansion and park. My toddler and I went during the pandemic so the center was closed. However, around the center is a butterfly garden, other gardens and a little play area with a small kitchen and instruments my daughter enjoyed. Also nearby is a trail that takes you to a little creek with waterfalls.

Monkey Cliff on a cascading creek are a short walk from the Nature Center into the John G. Hayes Forest Preserve. If you follow the path up the hill from the foot bridge, turn left to visit the remnants of an old house, corral and dam. Do not take young children into the fence at the house and be careful. The path on the high ground in the opposite direction from the house is a nice walk but the traffic noise from Route 28 is with you. Instead, from the bridge over the creek follow the path along the creek.

While there is quick access from the parking lot to the creek and the trees are very mature and the trails are decent, there are several reasons I rated this area a 3 star. The creek has constant reminders that it is used for sewage overflow. There are also signs advising people not to go in, drink or otherwise use the water in the creek. The main paved trail down to the first bridge is in serious disrepair. Anyone with accessibility issues would have difficulty on this path. The bridge is very nice however and provides a nice view of the water. While the trails are nice to walk along, there is limited signage. We got lost a couple times and creek crossings weren't well defined. Lastly there was a lot of erosion from the recent flash floods, but that is uncontrollable. Would go back but after clearly identifying the trails to go on and having a bit more research done.

A beautiful, quiet place that seems quite remote from the hurly-burly of Rockville.

Wonderful place to hike. It is very challenging and calm.
