Foster's has been one of my staples for over a decade. Over the last few years I was going frequently in the summer to enjoy lunch and work outside at one of their many picnic tables for a few hours. They've been very cautious about handling the risks of COVID, which I applaud, although I miss being able to go on a weekday. This place is a Durham institution for a reason! Make sure you check out whatever is on special and what's in the prepared foods section (both salads and hot meals).

I’m sure this place was wonderful before the pandemic. However now you have to call in your order over the phone and it takes 20-25 minutes. If you do want to eat here, order 20 minutes ahead of time. Food was good though.

Good food, but the most poorly ran ordering system in Durham. You must call your order in outside their front door, then wait on average for 30min for food. You would think they could afford to have a cashier take orders like everywhere else in town. Just disappointing.

Foster's has always been one of my favorite Durham restaurants, but they've been a godsend during the pandemic because of their family dinners. For $115 you get dinners for 2 adults for 5 nights (with both meaty and vegetarian options), plus salad and fixings, all of which you pick up curbside. For a little more you can order sides and bread too. The menu is different every week, all the meals are ready to go in the oven, everything seems to be made from scratch and sprinkled with herbs in classic Sarah Foster style, and for us the food always stretches way further than 5 nights of meals. The bag of salad is always giant enough to make some lunch salads, and at least a few of the dinner meals always have enough leftovers for a lunch, so on the weeks we order Foster's, we really don't have to buy many groceries. It's pricier than what it costs to cook yourself, but it's worth it on the occasional week when you're too exhausted and uninspired to go through the motions in the kitchen. Plus let's be real, Sarah Foster's vegetarian food is almost certainly healthier and more interesting than anything we'd make at home, and the chances of me scattering fresh herbs on anything are basically zilch. Highly highly recommend checking out the family dinners if you haven't already.

My first experience with Foster’s market wasn’t a pleasant one. I didn’t like how they charge extra $2 convenience fee when you order online in advance, so I decided to place an order on site. However, when I arrived, staffs told me that they can’t accept orders on site and all orders had to be placed online or over the phone. At least it would’ve been nice if they announced that on their website in advance or put a barcode for on site contactless orders, but they refused to provide any.nAfter two weeks I finally decided to place an order for Cobb salad despite the extra cost. The salad was very similar to a homemade salad - not too overwhelming with sauce or seasoning - and I liked it overall. Food here is definitely good but their service needs huge improvement.
