I went just after a show fall. It was gorgeous. Trail is mostly uphill. Parking lot is along a very busy road. Be careful. Crossed over some tame streams. Very nice. Really cool look out point about 4.5 miles in.

Hard hiking on the AT southbound. First few miles are mostly up hill until you reach the Shenandoah National park. The trail grade and condition gets better. Enjoy a quiet and beautiful hike!

The parking here is decent; you will potentially have a hard time finding a spot during the busy season though. Heading south bound on the AT is a heck of a climb to the Tom Floyd Shelter, then into Shenandoah National Park. Going north bound, you parallel the fence line of the Smithsonian facility about a mile or so heading to the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter.

Nice place to catch a trolley and head into town. Trail angels also tend to leave water and snacks.
