What a phenomenal experience! So much history for the whole family. We strongly recommend visiting this area. We came in the morning and then went to the state park in the afternoon returning around 7p for the lighting ceremony. What an excellent experience. We recommend giving yourself some time to walk through the museum, reading and viewing all of the items of historical significance.
Worth seeing once in your life, but once is definitely enough in my opinion. I drive out west every year around July and usually skip Mount Rushmore for Devil's Tower (a couple of hours away), but when friends who have not seen the monument drive out with me we usually stop here for a bit.nnThe ceremony/video that starts at 9 pm was interesting and worth hanging around for. They light the faces up after the ceremony and it makes for some pretty cool pictures.
The carving of the president's is startling! How it was done with technology from about a century ago is amazing. The geological tour was very informative. The gift shop is loaded with great things and the Thomas Jefferson vanilla ice cream is actually very good. The hiking trail was awesome as well. The down side is the mountain you have to climb to get their. Our truck with a tow package had some difficulty. It's a great place to visit for one day as the small town only has redundant clothing stores with some pizza and burger joints mixed in.if you're into Outback and Olive Garden then you wont find that here. But I'd recommend this one day trip to others.
It is a great place to visit to see something very unique and awe inspiring. The park itself is small but nicely kept up. We enjoyed the hike to the base of the sculptures. You get some great photo opportunities at the base of the mountain. The short movie about the creation of the monument was interesting. It definitely was worth going to see at least one time.
Can one really give a bad review to such an astonishing sight? You can feel the history coursing through your veins as you glance at the founding fathers of our amazing country. This place will make you feel extremely patriotic and glad to be an American. To top all of this off the parking is easy, convenient and totally affordable. As a Chicagoan I am used to spending at least $25 on parking in any Gov sponsored lots.
