This place is so wonderful and the people that work there are awesome. It is a place where kids that are to old to foster out and to young to live on their own, it provides them a safe place to live, the team there teaches them important life skills as shopping, cooking, cleaning, balance checkbook, living on a budget, etc., So when they are old enough they will be able to go out into the world and be successful on their own. It also allows them to finish school without the added stress of being homeless. It also helps foster families by assisting with housing and needs in the home as able.
Long story, but to summarize, my nephew ended up at this place and never left alive. The year 1991, his name Lamar is what he went by. He was 15 and drowned in the Illinois River. Our family always suspected foul play but could not prove it. Somebody knows what really happened to him. It’s been 30 years!
I was here in 1974-1976. I have very fond memories of the place. I still have a brochure that I was featured on standing under the entrance of the gate. Rev Darrah was the Director. Mr Leatherman was second in command. Rev Mauldin was counselor.nnI had wonderful house parents during the time I was there. I went to school in town and was allowed to be in activities.nnRemember several of the girls from Layman Hall. Beverly, Carman, Pam, LaWanda to name a few. Often wonder where they are now.nnI went on to marry and had two children. My daughter is a nurse and her husband an OSBI agent. My son is a doctor and married to a nurse. I have six beautiful grandchildren. We adopted my husband’s niece and have two more grandchildren and now 2 great grandchildren.nnI loved my time there.
I was there in the late 70s first of many homes and foster homes. Everyone was very nice but of course I didn't want to be there. So I didn't stay long a friend and I went to school one morning and decided to climb out a window and took off hichhiking of course just to be sent to another one. I never felt wanted anywhere but the people here were very expensive so nice and met some kids that I often wonder what happened to them or where their at. I went on to marry when I was 17 had a baby and went to beauty school. Did hair many of years. Loved it. And raised my kids to know they were wanted and loved, of course I made my mistakes as we all do but tried to break those chains. Some of foster homes were awful and to say the least not always good at what they did. But this place was different. I only wish I'd gave it more of a chance. Very good people and hope this place will help alot more kids down the road. Alot of us were scared with our walls high and waited for the worsest so it takes alot of patients and love to deal with us. But I want to thank my house parents there for being so kind, the wife was pregnant and the husband had dark hair dark skin. Been too long can't remember their names.nnThank younJulie ParumnSeminole ok
I was at this place in the late 70s. Most of the kids went home on the weekends and their cottages closed. I wasn't one of those kids. I stayed in what was called the long term cottage. We we really treated very good. Though we didn't think so at the time because we were kids. I have very good memories of going to Lake Ten killer to play 500 and swim. I was allowed to got to school off campus and even got a job working at the fire station. We mostly played dominoes and checker at the fire station but when the Chief was coming I had to be busy. I got to wash the fire trucks after a fire which was pretty cool but let me tell you those trucks had to be shined 3 times a day and after a fire they were Hella dirty. Anyway I have some very fond memories of my house parents and the other kids. What an amazing place to be if you have to be in a home. Trust me I was in several and I don't have a good thing to say about any of the others . Hands down the best place in Oklahoma from my experience .
