We're a couple of 65 year old retirees. Picked a dry day(1-8-21) and started just before 8 am. 4 hrs later we signed out. Great hike. Good for the quads. Fantastic 360° views at the top, and along the way, too. Bring water. Thumbs up from us.
A strenuous out and back hike with significant elevation gain. Should only be attempted with hiking boots by moderately experienced hikers. Portions are washed out and replaced with rope assisted climbs. Steep steps make the last .3 miles lead to stunning views overlooking Honolulu. Expect to literally reach the clouds when conditions are right.nnGo early. This hike is accessed though a very nice gated community. At the guard shack inform them you’re here for hike. They’ll provide you a map and parking pass.
This is a pretty difficult trail. Be prepared to get dirty since it is very muddy and there are parts of the trail where you may have to use a supplied rope for climbing muddy inclines. It takes approximately two hours to get to the top of the mountain. You'll know you're almost there when you reach a set of stairs. You're about 25 minutes away from the summit when you reach these. The trail after the stairs is quite treacherous as it is slippery and about the width of three people with cliffs on either side of you. Be very careful here. It is best to have the right shoes. The summit is an old cell phone tower that gave me great service while climbing. I was able to make video calls and show my friends and family the amazing views. It takes less time to get back to the beginning but please take your time heading down the steep parts of the mountain. Great experience and amazing views of O'ahu and Honolulu. Approximately 3-4 to completely finish.
Fun trail! I would rate this a mid level medium difficulty trail because of the incline and large steps. There are quite a few of muddy spots, especially when its raining, but with a little bit of effort you can make it around without taking too much mud onboard. Takes about 1.5 hours to 2 hours to reach the radio tower. There is a security check point you have to go through to reach trail head, simple enough process and quite a bit of parking. Several places to stop for scenic breaks and photo opportunities. The mud can be really slick, so bring good traction shoes and maybe a walking poll if you need extra stability.
All the stars. It’s inside a gated community but the guard will give you a parking pass with a map where the parking is. Unlike most trails around the island, this hike has safe actual parking. They just ask you to be out by sunset. The hike is a bit rough at points with steep parts, steps and plenty of mud. You will get muddy. Took us about 45 mins to reach the first set of steps up and about 1.5 hours to get to the end. About 3 hours total to finish. The views on top are worth everything. Perhaps the best views of the island from every side. This is pretty much the stairway to heaven concept but legal. Definitely recommend. Just come prepared with water, sunscreen, bug spray and some extra pair of shoes or sandals for the ride home.
