Beautiful and very usual hike. Bring a flashlight or headlamp so people can see you in the tunnel. East end is an easier walk but a very small parking lot. We got there early on a weekday at 9:40 and it was full, so we went to the west entrance and easily found a parking spot. The lot was full to over double capacity when we returned. Returning to the west lot took a while for me, but we parked and were back in the car in about two hours having walked through the tunnel twice and up the east trail a bit. Definitely a must do!
Excellent hike on a blustery day. The tunnel provides a very unique experience. You really do need some means of illumination. Some great and interesting history so plan time to read the placards along the east side of the trail. The western side is fairly steep so if that is a concern, then park at the east trailhead and enjoy a mostly level hike to and through the tunnel.
Pretty nice experience. It is amazing to imagine how the tunnel was built back then. Popular, parking area was full & no overflow lots. We had to work to find a space. Bikes were a mistake on the weekend, had a couple of close calls with other visitors, two of whom were not carrying lights. Nice walk, save the bikes for weekdays when it is less popular.
Fun, relatively easy hike to explore local history! I would recommend watching the half-hour documentary on yt before heading to the tunnel. I would also recommend a flashlight and possibly a sweatshirt if you get cold easily. The tunnel itself is about a mile long and is quite dark in the middle if you don't have a light.
Suggest the easy walk on the east side entrance. About 3/4 mile walk to the tunnel. Make sure you have a flashlight since you will need it. We went through with a 3, 5, and 7 year old and they all loved it. It was on the long side for the 3 year old but he made it back and forth through the tunnel
