The western trail head for Spruce Mountain was a great trail! It started with gentle hills in a shaded forest. The trail eventually goes into a punctuated, steep climb to get to the summit for some great views!nnThe western trail for Sprucw mountain is definitely a trail less travelled, making a good tail to not meet anyone.nnThe GHP trail is also at this trail head. I haven't done it yet, but most people parking here are doing that trail.
Wow, if you only do the bottom you will think it's a good walk, but if you also do the mountain then what a great workout!
In the mid coast area of Maine, this is one of the hikes that offers a really pretty view as well as a longer hiking trail. You can make hikes as long as you want but if you hike this trail up Ragged Mountain, the trail starts off at the bottom of the mountain and you will follow the side of it for a while. That being said, this makes for a longer beginning and end. Once you get to an incline, it will be a pretty steep climb up a path which will then bring you to a look out. After going a little further, this will bring you to another look out that will point you into the direction of Camden. Keep going to the tower and you will make it to the peak which looks towards Spruce, Pleasant and Meadow Mountain. You can't climb the tower or anything but if you do insist, you can walk around it and go down the back side to the Camden Snowbowl. Once you get to the back side you have a few different choices to go down ski slopes or biking trails. Overall, this is a nice mountain that can take around 1 and half - 2 hours depending on your speed. If you want to hike over the mountain in the fastest trail, it can take an additional 30 or 45 minutes depending. The parking lot to Ragged mountain is small however if need be you can park on the side of the road. On the other side of the road is a trail up to Spruce Mountain which can take around 45 minutes or less to complete the entire trail. Spruce is a great quick hike up a smaller mountain. I bring my dog up it for an exercise.
Awesome path leading to some excellent views. Expect a fairly difficult hike. It's several miles and steep at parts.
Great hike to spectacular views of Maine's midcoast. Limited parking. Hike starts undulating up and down turning up after a mile or so. A plethora of great places to eat lunch while enjoying a view. Noisy trail but it's our own fault for not requiring quieter vehicles (looking at you, Harley).
