Absolutely beautiful architecture, but after reading about what you would pay for for a self-guided tour, I realized it was simply to just walk AROUND the building. Absolutely not worth 20 bucks a person. I was told there are plaques around the building explaining how life was like. But honestly, Google has that information for free. Just find something else interesting and historic before wasting your time
Creepy, creepy place. Guides were very cool and knew what they were talking about. Highly recommend the tour. The main cell block was off limits due to the roof collapse: (
The place is massive and so rich in history! It initially caught my attention as I was driving by and of course I had to Google it to see what it was. To my surprise, this was where Prison Break (huuugee fan) was filmed so it was great being able to imagine the show on set. I then scheduled a walking tour which definitely took over an hour to complete. There are information boards at various stops to talk about the buildings and what the area was used for. The path is guided to let you know where to walk next and there's also space in between each party to allow for social distancing. Being a first timer, we should've considered the guided tour just to get more history on the property and get access to some of the buildings. Some of the more interesting sites had a QR code that led you to a virtual tour inside the buildings. We'll actually want to go on the haunted tour next as this place seems pretty neat for all the spooky vibes.
Tonight we took the haunted tour at the old Joliet State Prison. Our tour guide was very good at her job and she was very informative and it was pretty cool how she had all the stories memorized. It was quite interesting to hear the stories of have prisoners that lived there at the prison. She said that we were the first group to be able to view the cells because they were awaiting all the test results to make sure the building was cleared so that we could go in and be safe. I'm so glad that we were able to go in because that was one of the coolest parts of the whole tour. The cells were so small it's crazy to imagine two people living in them. Then we saw the sample of the original cell sitting outside solitary confinement. Couldn't even imagine saying in such a small area that's just a mere 7x7 Square Room, it was So small! Was cool to also hear about the certain TV shows and movies that had actually taken place there like Prison Break, Blues Brothers, Ghost Adventures and Natural Born Killers. It was $40 each from my husband and I to get in and worth the price. Although I am curious what the tour would be like if past employees led the tour instead I might consider going back if there are different stories. Anyway it's worth the money go check it out it's pretty cool!
It was a great experience. Only loses one star because I really wanted to see the cell blocks and couldn't because of recent structural failings and safety hazards.
