This place is magical, and a great hiking destination with Amazing views ud83dude00 You & the family really need to plan a hiking / picnic day and enjoy the great outdoors of Grayson Highlands! There are wild ponies, but during this particular adventure we only had the privilege to see one. Make sure you pack appropriately for the weather and hiking necessities: water, hiking boots, a jacket if needed etc.
Grayson Highlands is a beautiful park to visit. The Appalachian trail runs through the park and there are several other trails to explore. There are adorable little fetal ponies who live in the park. We did not see any on this particular visit as the weather was less than ideal. There was heavy fog so we could have been 10 feet from some points and would never have known. The rolling fog and wind and rain through the spine like meadows had a really cool surreal feeling.
Such a wonderful place! It is always fun to see the wild ponies. If you are used to hiking in the southeast, being sunscreen. There is so much more beautiful but open hiking here that sunburn is a real risk. LOL
Absolutely stunning, but the day i went it was pouring rain so going the difficult trail while it was pouring wasn't the best idea. But the trees and water falls were very pretty. I will definitely go again, but during the spring.
The trails are great for hiking. So many sights to see. We were able to see the wild horses up close.
