Nice and quiet place. Make sure everything is tied down before heading up the trail.

Went up here on Labor day weekend and it was busy but still plenty of room for everyone. Lot of hikers come through here since the AT runs right through this spot. Also a lot of horseback riders. In addition to the ponies there were some cattle outside the fence grazing along the hills. Looking around, it's kind of like a min overland expo. Several people with roof-top tents. A lot of Tacomas and Jeeps up here plus a few brave Subarus and similar vehicles, and amazingly, somebody in a minivan and a couple of hikers in a Prius. For the life of me I can't figure out how the Prius made it up there. It is a very rocky, jarring, white knuckled ride up that takes 45 mins to an hour, choosing your lines carefully as there are a lot of jagged rocks and other obstacles. There is a privy and a food storage locker for hikers. Carry out all your trash and please pickup after your pets.

An awesome place to camp and hike trails the A.T. runs right through the Scales! The one track road is a beast but taking it slow and easy one can make it. Plan on a 45 minute drive up and out! Witnessed a Dodge caravan make it up to the Scales never in my wildest dreams would I have attempted sure a task! And it made it fine! So head on up to the Scales for some great relaxation and solitude! Wild ponies and cattle are also neat to encounter while staying at the Scales!

One of the best camping spots I have found during my time exploring the Federal Land in the area. The road up is difficult, ~4.5 mile unimproved dirt, rock and roots. I had little issue in my Yukon, but tire placement was important not to bust a running board at a couple places. I can believe people have gotten up there in less capable vehicles, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable in anything with less ground clearance. Took us about 40-45 minutes each way, but the camping at the top is so worth it. You could easily fit 20 vehicles and tents up at the top. There are pit toilets and wild horses at the top.

A fun spot in the middle of several trails, a BIFFY (Bathroom In Forest For You), beautiful wild ponies.
