Loved it! The West Maui Mountains are amazing but it's tough to appreciate any more than a small bit of them because of the rugged terrain. This hike let me finally feel like I understand them a little better.nnMy daughter (11) and I hiked it wearing slides (only the first half; we had less time than we'd like), despite many reviewers and a few people we met at the trailhead saying it was slippery. The trail was wide enough and structurally sound -- it always allowed us to pick good footsteps.

Great trail. It’s got a lot of vertical so be ready for that but the views on the way up, even if you stop at the 1/4 observation deck, are well worth it. In the afternoon the peak is socked in with fog so be warned but they have tables at the top to take a rest at.

I went in winter, which is known for wet, muddy and slick conditions. I only had running shoes so I watched the weather for over a week and went on the day with the lowest % chance of rain. Waiting paid off big- the view was spectacular and the whole trail was sunny. The trail was not wet, but it was still a bit slippery with my runners on. Hiking boots or trail runners would have been better, but if you go on a nice day, runners will be fine, you just need to watch your step. I arrived at 8:20 am and there were lots of parking spots, but when I left at 10:30 am, the parking lot was full. Took around 1 hr and 10 minutes on the way up and 45 minutes on the way down. The hardest part was the first 1/4 mile, otherwise, the trail is a gradual incline. Moderate fitness level required. Highly recommend!

This is not a ‘moderate’ hike as some websites have said. This is definitely hard, and you’ll need water and a snack for sure. This is not for the faint of heart since it is mostly straight up the whole way.nnThe views are incredible, but as you get to the top the views do not necessarily get better. Towards the top you may get some cloud cover and a little wet/muddy terrain.nnHiking down is just as challenging on your body. But this hike has spectacular views, and is covered in certain points with different traverses and switchbacks.nnThis hike took us about 1.25h up and maybe 45m down.

This is a beautiful hike! But... do NOT go to the top if it's raining!!! I watched the weather and went on the driest day I could find when I was visiting Maui. It started off beautiful with no clouds or rain. Then at about mile 1.5, clouds rolled in. I got to the top and it was pouring with no view, which is fine, but the trek down was insane! I slipped 13 times going down, 1 time going up. Sliding in the mud and slick clay was MUCH harder than the elevation gain. I'd love to do this one again in the dry season.
