Great campsite after a fun wet expedition

One of my favorite areas on the island of Maui to spend time at. I enjoy the hike from Kaupo up through the park (6000 foot climb). It takes you through a wide range of climate zones and offers breath taking views when it is clear. Paliku is right on the edge of the crater and the rainforest. The lush cliffs the line the cabin are filled with many birds. There are also some day hikes that will take you up to the crater edge. A must for all those who enjoy the backcountry and Maui. I can not wait to get back.

Beautiful place to camp! This is the place you want to be if doing an overnight hike into the crater.nnWe saw plenty of nene, and met a local family staying at the cabin. Not busy or touristed at all - a very pristine spot! Beautiful mountains overlook the site. Make sure you bring a filter, or be prepared to boil water.nnWe camped, but cabin looked good. There were some nene defending a couple of the tent spots (they hiss if you get anywhere near), so we let them be. Not sure what the etiquette is if they had been defending all the spots, but there is a ranger at the site who could probably advise!
