The Slide Trail upper trailhead

Loved this trail. I've hiked it dozens of times. There's some great river access along the way. I have frequently seen big horn sheep in the area.nnSometimes I make this into a loop by taking the Picuris Trail up the side of the Gorge and hiking along the trails on the Mesa back to my car at the Slide Trail head.

Beautiful mostly easy trail (except for the slide area).

Great views and wildlife. The trails are in good shape and not crowded.

This trailhead begins at the parking lot at the end of county rd 110 in Taos. It is an easy and beautiful hike downhill into the Rio Grande gorge And as you walk you get closer and closer to the Rio Pueblo (river). There are a couple of spots along the trail where you can take a very short side trip down to the Rio Pueblo. The trail ends at a gate and gravel road near the Taos Junction Bridge, and it is an easy walk down the road to the bridge if one is inspired to extend the hike further. It is a popular trail but not a crowded one. I often see bighorn sheep in this area. It is approximately 1.3 miles down to the gate and thus about 2.7 miles roundtrip. Uphill on the way back but not steep.

Favorite hiking place. Busier than you would think.
