These shelters are built much better than I expected. It's going to make my Thu-hike this summer much more enjoyable.
This shelter was clean when we arrived and there is a privy without walls nearby. There is also space for a few tents as well as trees for hanging a hammock. The reason for 3 stars is the amount of black flies that were at this shelter. I don't think I have ever experienced black flies of this magnitude in my life. It was impossible to do anything. When I got into my hammock there were so many buzzing between the bug net and rainfly that it sounded like a steady rain. Despite the stiff breeze they were unrelenting.
Ten miles from the summit of Mt Monadnock, this Adirondack style shelter is one of five such shelters along the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway's 54mi trail system. A more detailed guide and map is readily available in your local Toadstool book shop. The Howe Reservoir is nearby as well as Eliza Adams Gorge. If you looking to hike summit to summit along this Greenway or simply wish to spend one night alone in the woods, this shelter offers spectacular primitive camping and total solitude!
