Love how far apart the spaces are. Peaceful place.
Great campsite, clean and a lot of space between sites in meadow area. Hosts were very helpful. Campsite was also peaceful. Great weekend. Good lake for fishing and well groomed trails offer plenty to do.
Please note that this is the campground within Johnson Sauk, as there seem to be reviews of the campground in that entry as well.nnAnyway, this is a TERRIFIC campground with plenty of spots with lots of variety. There are basically three main camping areas: a larger one that is more open with fewer trees with a small playground for the kiddos, and two smaller ones that are basically loops within the tall pines. We stayed at one of the loops within the pines and it had a terrific atmosphere! It almost feels like you are in a different part of the country.nnWe stayed in spot 020, which is directly across from the bathrooms in this loop. That was very convenient, but there's also a very bright light on a pole above the bathroom that was distracting as we tried to sleep. They need to either have a dimmer light, or make it so that it doesn't beam across to the campsites. At any rate, the campsite itself was very nice with plenty of space: there's a gravel driveway, a grill, a picnic table, and plenty of grass within the pines trees. We did not have a camper; we tent camped here with some family members who stayed in site 019 with a camper. There is a tent-only camping area but there is no electricity there and you have to walk to the sites. We prefer having electricity even when we tent camp!nnEach camping area has its own bathrooms, but these are just basically a stall and urinal - no sinks or showers. But there is a main bath house centrally located that is very nice with showers, many stalls, sinks, mirrors, and a vending machine, as well as emergency info posted on the outside. There is also plenty of parking around the entire area. The bathrooms were clean, the garbage was changed regularly, and we felt the entire campground was maintained well.nnThere are trails just off of the campsites that are basically loops but are secluded in the woods. We walked the trails after dark with flashlights, which was very enjoyable. There is no trail that goes all the way around the lake, which I found disappointing.nnThere is a camp store within walking or driving distance, and they sell firewood and ice, and there are a variety of boat rentals (canoes, kayaks, row boats, etc). There is also a nice family restaurant on the top floor (Red Earth Cafe) that has good food but slow service and is only open limited hours.nnRegarding picking a campsite, it all depends on your needs and desires. If you have a long camper, you'll be more limited and may want to scout a location first. There are a few handicapped sites with full cement driveways. And there are some very small sites as well with very little space. I will be posting a YouTube video of our drive through of the campground so that potential visitors can scout a location before reserving.nnAll in all, this is one of the better campgrounds that was have visited, even though there isn't as much to do as some of the other popular ones like Starved Rock or Maquoketa Caves. We would definitely camp here again - it was quiet, pleasant, well-maintained, and had a great atmosphere!
Comfortable camp grounds with plenty of space between spots. Nice trails and even a restaurant. See photos for breakfast menu
It would make this place great if they had water at some of spots.
