Reviews
Went to central synagogue for Yom Kippur services. Community is very dedicated and welcoming. Will be returning this upcoming season.
I moved to downtown Chicago to take a new job from another city. Just as I found an apartment convenient to work, I found a Conservative shul also close to the apartment. What I found was much more. Able to feel the Kavanah while praying, a wonderfully friendly group of people that welcomed me as if we have always know each other. Having come from a large shul I found it easy to fit in.nnConveniently located in the office building across Michigan Avenue from the Art Institute. (122 S Michigan, Suite 1449).nnCome by any Shabbat to both pray and socialize.
Chicago Central Synagogue is a very special place. It offers inspiring religious services conducted by Hazzan Toby Lou Hayman. Hazzan Hayman has a beautiful mezzo soprano voice that engulfs the congregation spiritually, motivating them to participate in the services wholeheartedly. I was told that in addition to leading Friday night and Shabbat services, Hazzan Hayman also serves as the Hazzan for the High Holy Day services and all other holidays throughout the year.nnI was surprised to find out that at the end of the religious service that I attended, a lavish kosher meal was served. I learned that this is their normal custom after every service. (With the exception of fasting holidays, of course.)nnI found out that the congregation is made up of people of all ages from many locations throughout the Chicago and suburban areas, as well as frequent guest travelers from across the US and from abroad. Hospitality and friendliness are instinctive characteristics of this congregation, and I was made to feel comfortable and welcome.nnThe synagogue is completely egalitarian with women having the same rights as men. They told me that one of their mottoes is “at Central Synagogue everyone counts!”nnAs you can see, I am quite favorably impressed with this synagogue, and I recommend that you visit it soon and find out for yourself what its like.nnMichael Allen
