Dropped by here to explore a bit and walked the short trail leading out from the parking lot (lots of parking spaces) away from the visitor center then the short trail to the visitor center and toured the Butterfly garden area. Should be pretty later in the year when the flowers are in bloom.

Beautiful Visitors Center with cool displays of local history and fauna. Extremely nice and helpful staff. A lovely view of the river at the top of a bluff, a short boardwalk and walking trail on site.nFor more extensive hiking trails travel to Conway, 15 miles north, at Waccamaw NWR-Cox Ferry Lake Recreation Area (although no public toilets or drinking water-plan ahead) with over 5 miles of tree covered walking trails, an awesome boardwalk over the swamp and a challenging bike trail through the woods, a catch/release fishing bridge and picnic tables at a pond off Gary Lake Blvd and a fishing pier and dock off W Cox Ferry Rd on Cox Ferry Lake adjacent to the Waccamaw River.

Extremely knowledgeable employees educate children and adults of all levels of scientific knowledge about the beautiful and important South Carolina river systems and the wildlife that live there.
