I have a reactive dog (Lucky), and haven't had to leave him with total strangers in the four years since adopting him. I was nervous about leaving him with anyone, so I some research on some locations, got input from professionals about my options, and stopped by here as one of my choices to explore.
When I walked in, I asked for a tour and how they handle things when dealing with dogs similar to Lucky's disposition. They showed me the areas they have set aside for dogs like him, and they were able to answer my questions about how to know when it's safe to handle dogs and what continuing education for staff looks like. They were willing to feed the food and treats I designated and provided for Lucky's stay as well. The website they provided for filling out the info they needed as far as signing their waiver and providing vaccination info was straightforward. When I dropped him off, they were able to lead him to his temporary home with no issue and documented the items I dropped off with him.
I had seen on other reviews that other patrons had received images and updates as to their pet's well-being. Prior to dropping him off, I wrote an email with instructions for best handling and to let them know that I was quite anxious about leaving him for the first time and indicated that pics of him interacting with staff would help immensely to make me feel better . I did not receive a reply to my email, nor did I receive any communication for the duration of his stay.
My day sitter was kind enough to pick Lucky up and return him home. She said that he seemed fine, if eager to depart, and was quite excited when he returned home.
One thing about which I was truly impressed was Lucky's health after his visit. In many cases, dogs staying at boarding facilities are exposed to pathogens to which they aren't accustomed. Adapting to these pathogens can cause mild illness. In addition, the stress of staying often causes diarrhea during and after the stay. Lucky displayed neither of these traits. Being as he was housed completely separate, exposure to pathogens would have remained minimal; however, this implies that the area he inhabited was sanitary. He had no diarrhea at home, which was doubly impressive since we were in the process of switching him to a new food.
I'm definitely inclined to use Central Park Pet Retreat's services again. The only reason for reducing my review by a star was the lack of communication during Lucky's stay. Thank you so much!
3/4 times I've left my dog here for boarding have been great.
The first 3 times I left my dog here were for 1 or 2 nights, these went perfectly well. Picked him up and he was happy and totally normal.
The last time I left him for a week and it wasn't so great. He came home lethargic, he had lost weight; he went from 42 to 37lbs, he had a few bite marks on him and he wasn't eating. I can't work out exactly what went wrong this time. It took a good 2 weeks for him to get back to normal. I'm wondering if they were understaffed and not looking after the dogs like they normally do and didn't notice he wasn't eating and didn't notice another dog was being aggressive.
Central Park Pet Retreat is a safe, happy and clean place. It is our pets home away from home. They have so many lovely people who work here and genuinely care about each pet. The activities keep our Daisy well engaged and active all day. Great place that I would recommend to anyone.
If I could vote 0 stars i would lack of professionalism lack of responsibility. There is nothing good at all I csn say about this facility other then run as far and as fast I wish I had instead I caused my dog fear and anxiety by continuing to send him there thankfully I know better now
No better hands to leave your dog in than CPPR. These staff have real love for all the pets that come to stay. Couldn't be more thankful. Every time we've had to go out of town, we always trusted them with our dog. And you may just be lucky enough to have your furry friend featured on their insta!
