Amazing! Winsor trail 254 is very nice, I enjoyed every mile of it, pure nature, wild life, incredible views, forest changes as you go on, very fresh and clean air, hundreds of spots for nature/landscape photography, a lot of hikers even on Tuesday! Loved this area a lot, it’s enormous!
There is a special and unique beauty to this place that is hard to describe without witnessing it firsthand. A backpacking trip from the south to north end of the wilderness is an amazing experience with days spent hiking for miles above treeline. Some very remote parts of the wilderness have rarely been visited by humans. I hope people continue to take care of this treasure.
The Pecos Wilderness is a heavily forested rugged mountain land; ranging from 8,400 to over 13,000 feet in elevation. Truchas Peak, at 13,103 feet, is the second highest point in New Mexico. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, prominently visible from the city of Santa Fe, run northeast to southwest across Pecos Wilderness. I visited here with my parents in April 2007. See photos; taken along route 475.
Backpacking: We started from the parking lot of the ski resort and made our way up and then down to Lake Katherine where we camped over night. The next day we hiked up Mt. Baldy. This hike was 17 miles round-trip. If you decide to visit, do it in October when the Aspen forests are changing color. Great place. I hope to return someday and do it all over again.
Went backpacking over Labour Day. Amazing solitude and vistas! The divide and skyline trails are amazing. Be sure to hike to Truchas Lake for a view of the massive granite face.
