Historical plaque inscription:nIn celebration of Gay’s Lion Farm.nFrom its start on July 1, 1925, until it closed in December of 1942, the roar of hundreds of lions could be heard throughout the valley, into the hills and beyond.nnErected in 2000 by City of El Monte.nnNote: Gay's Lion Farm was a tourist attraction founded by Charles and Muriel Gay. The farm became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern California. At its high point, there were more than 200 adult lions living at the farm. In 1942, it was closed due to wartime meat shortages.

I remember going by the lion farm and hearing all the lions roaring because they were hungry
