Stark’s Knob was formed 460-440 million years ago during the middle of the Ordovician Age. A volcanic arc pushed west into Vermont and eastern New York causing the continent to buckle in front of it. Cracks (vents) opened in the earth’s crust and basalt lava flowed out of the cracks into the shallow sea that covered the area. It is often mistakenly referred to as a volcano, probably because early investigators described it as a volcano or volcanic plug. One of two scientific reservations under the management of the New York State Museum, a mass of volcanic rock, Stark's Knob is composed of submarine pillow lava called pillow basalt. It also played an important part in the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.

Be careful on the trail! Its a bit precarious, and there's an old barb wire fence hanging over it that I didn't even see until I was past. Very important geological and historical site but unfortubately it doesn't seem to get much attention.
