Did you know that there were real, living sheep on the Sheep Meadow? Yes, there were! And they were living in the Tavern of the Green, back it was a more of a barn, than an elite restaurant. And they had a shepherd to take good care of them. But that was long ago, the sheep were moved out in 1934, nearly a century ago.nEven before that it was a swampy, rocky ground that required the blasting of rock outcrops and the installation of four feet of soil to become what it is today. However, it is one of the most popular destinations in Central Park today!nToday, besides all the picnics and games, the Sheep Meadow is home to multiple events like the AIDS walk, the New York City Urban Starfest, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's installation The Gates, and numerous more.nOne of the coolest things that you can see on the Sheep Meadow is the sky…literally. The place is considered free of glare from local lighting and where almost the entire sky can be seen.nAnd many films have been shot there, too! You can see Sheep Meadow in It Could Happen To You (1994), The Fisher King (1991), Wall Street (1987), Ghostbusters (1984), Enchanted (2007), and The Manchurian Candidate (1962)!

Fantastic wide open greenspace in Central Park. You will find sunbathers here, kids playing and running, picnics, birthday parties, Frisbee or catch games. Always something going on here and a great open space to relax. Beautiful fall leaf views as well!!
