Beautiful walk across open grassland that is protected territory for eastern bluebirds, with dozens of nesting boxes, down to a wonderful mixed forest of birch, beech, oak, pine and spruce. A nice trail well maintained. Two long loops and a connecting link along the river. Some tricky sections with fairly steep climbs, but they are short. Be particularly careful in winter conditions due to ice under snow and leaves. There is an old, essentially abandoned fishing cottage at the waters edge....could restored and would make a great picnic spot, even rented out overnight with a permit to raise some funds to support the Midcoast Conservancy that now owns and manages the Preserve. And after your hike, stop at the Alna Store, just a half mile north at the junction with Dock Road. Great food and local craft beers....take out service only right now, but for the hardy folks, there is a picnic table on the porch out from where you can watch a car go by, if that were to happen--not much traffic out here! Very worth the visit!

Well maintained and easy to follow trails, with a variety of scenery.

Serene and beautiful preserve--hike would be excellent for an individual seeking somewhere quiet to reflect or a family with inquisitive children.
