This enormous waterbreaker leads to the lighthouse, some 1 mile into the bay. It is a long walk on relatively even terrain considering that each block is enormous. It is a great hike on sunny days. On windy days, it can be wet.nnIt was build between 1881-1899 for the sum of $750,000 with over 700,000 tons of granite. It protects the harbor.nnI had to think of the pyramids in Egypt as these were also build of enormous stone blocks.

Wonderful 2 mile walk out into the bay. Takes about 45 mins each way with kids, can get very windy!

This is certainly one of the places you will want to check out if you visit Rockland. The long breakwater is a fun hike that is right on the ocean. There is lots of sight seeing on the walk and some times you can find people fishing on the side of it. You yourself could be one of those people fishing. If you are really adventurous, you could go swimming. It isn't the cleanest of places to swim but it certain is a place.

My girlfriend told me to take off my shoes as we were almost at the lighthouse at the end. Being the arrogant boyfriend I am, I didn't listen. My shoes and socks got soaked.nnTake off your shoes and socks in that section. It's not as shallow as you think
