SUPER disorganized. I tried to make reservations online but they were sold out so I texted the number on the site, they took a long time to respond and finally told us to head over. When we arrived at the starved rock location the girl at the table said they would MAYBE have kayaks available at 3:30, it was 2pm. We told her we would wait. I left with the car to get gas while someone from our group waited. 20 minutes later I got a call that the kayaks were ready and we could head out. A different employee had come to the table and asked my mother if she was being helped and then proceeded to tell her they had plenty of kayaks available. Why didn’t the first employee know they had plenty of kayaks available, why did it take a different employee coming out to actually help us. The lack of clear communication was enough to discourage me from going through this company again, it was a frustrating experience. The actual trip was fine, pretty standard kayaking, good prices for all day and 4 hour trips. Decent scenery. The guy who helped put our kayaks in the water and pull them out at the end was very helpful and friendly but all in all it was a pretty irritating experience to just book some kayaks.
Their customer serivce by text, responds quickly and is super helpful to first time campers. Love that you can rent their tents for camping pictured. I highly recommend their camping and kayaking. A great fun weekend at a reasonable price.
We had a great time! Our guide, was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable, full of fun stories, and fun to be around. He also made us feel safe. The weather was perfect and we got to see some wildlife. Highly recommend.
My first time kayaking and I really enjoyed myself. My friend and I signed up for the morning tour and I was happy with it starting right on time. The quick tutorial was informative and the instructor offered good tips. He was also very helpful with showing everyone which PFD (personal floatation device- not a life vest) was the best for their build. It wasn't as scenic as I'd imagined prior to coming, but seeing that it's a small river in Illinois I wasn't really expecting grand views either. Still, it was a very peaceful/serene time and the weather was amazing. There was a steady stream of traffic coming from the power-boaters, but they stayed on their side of the water just fine so it wasn't that much of a bother. Like I said, it was my first time kayaking so the incoming waves from the PB were somewhat of shock initially, but the instructor did warn us during the tutorial about them, and suggested we just ride the waves before paddling again which worked good enough for me. During the tour the instructor gave us a bit of background info about the river and the barges which was pretty nice to know. There were actually two instructors on the tour with us- one in the front leading and one in the back making sure the entire group stayed together. At one point my friend and I got stuck on sand while paddling, but Zack (the other instructor who paddled behind the group) was nice enough to talk us through it and help get us out. If it's your first time kayaking, I highly suggest renting a double tandem- it helped eased some of my nerves knowing that I had a partner in the boat with me. The tour was supposed to last 2 hours, but we finished about 30-35 minutes earlier. Overall, I recommend booking this tour. Sidenote: This is a great activity to help build trust and communication with another person- especially if you book a double tandem (2 person boat).
We did a half day rental of 4 kayaks for our group at their Starved Rock location. Had a blast. Great location, very helpful staff. Good equipment. The kayaks are very stable, and very good for beginners.
