The hike to the shelter and back was shorter than expected. There is a steep climb down to the shelter that may require you to sit and ease yourself down in places. Coming back up, be aware of the weight in your backpack as it can pull you backwards if you aren't accustomed to it. You do not want to fall backwards on this climb! It's a very short hike so all you need to hike in and back is basic needs, like water. We saw a few interesting large animal tracks while there. It's beautiful - just like every other place in the Bankhead National Forest.
