This incredible tree is local legend. While visiting Hatteras Island I was taken here. The word CORA is carved into the tree in about 10 inch high letters and looks ancient. There are many theories about it but it is famous for being famous. The tree itself is spectacular in its own right. Highly recommended!

This place kept coming up on my Google maps so I started to look into it. Turns out the house we rented for our vacation is right beside the Cora tree. Locals tell me it's a tree that's cursed, from a witch who was to be burned at the tree with her child. Legend has it, lighting struck the tree and she disappeared. The tree is hollow and looks like it was struck but who knows. The tree is huge for a live oak measuring close to 7' across. Lots of stuff online about it if your interested.
